Meet one of Labor's National Treasures Race Mathews at an Afternoon Tea to honour a man who has given, and still gives, so much to the Labor movement.
Hosted by our Prahran Candidate Neil Pharaoh, Race will be introduced by another of Labor’s iconic figures, Victoria's 41st Premier John Cain.

Race, a long-term Prahran Branch Member, joined the ALP in 1956, became Chief of Staff to Gough Whitlam and to Labor leaders in the Parliament of Victoria. He served as the Federal Member for Casey and the State Member for Oakleigh. He held Ministerial positions in Community Services, Police and Emergency Services and the Arts.
Race is a senior Labor historian, a long-serving secretary and a former president of the Fabian Society, with a long interest in co-operatives as a means to spread ownership and participation among working people. His books include Australia’s First Fabians: Middle-Class Radicals, Labour Activists and the Early Labour Movement, Jobs of Our Own: Building a Stakeholder Society and Of Labour and Liberty: Distributism in Victoria 1891-1966.
Race also founded Local Labor, whose members are rank and file ALP members dedicated to Party reform and democratisation, including the implementation of the recommendations of the Bracks-Carr-Faulkner Review in 2010.
